Project
Urbanite Interface
Just under an acre, this residence also services as a small-scale organic avocado ranch. We created perimeter edging where the property interfaces with the street, and the goal was to create protection from cars on a narrow street while inviting beneficial birds and insects to work with the property’s overall integrated pest management system. In order to save water to give to the more-productive avocado trees, we went with a contemporary Southwestern take on the hedgerow, comprised of a majority California native plants. The hardscape is comprised of pieces of upcycled concrete, saved and diverted from the landfill by incorporating the debris from a demolition project the landscape contractor was doing around the time of construction. The concrete pieces were placed vertically, each one butted up in ascending and descendingsizes to create a geologic-like edging pattern. We laid California Gold gravel in front of the upcycled concrete edging to maximize permeability and reinforce the contemporary Southwestern style, while allowing for vehicles on the narrow road.
